5th Grade Math Test – Algebraic Reasoning

Assessing student understanding of grade-level concepts is essential to the learning cycle. Once students have had an opportunity to practice and apply these skills, it is essential to have a tool to use to measure student progress. If you are looking for a tool to assess student understanding of algebraic thinking, you have come to the right place!

Teach Starter has created this comprehensive math assessment to use with your 5th-grade students. With this assessment, students will demonstrate an understanding of different 5th-grade standards related to algebraic reasoning. This math test requires students to analyze and solve a variety of word problems, justify their reasonings, and solve computational-based problems.

This assessment covers the following topics:

  • Identifying prime and composite numbers
  • Representing and solving multi-step problems involving the four operations with whole numbers using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity
  • Generating a numerical pattern when given a rule in the form y = ax or y = x + a and graphing on a coordinate plane
  • Recognizing the difference between additive and multiplicative numerical patterns given in a table or graph
  • Describing the meaning of parentheses and brackets in a numerical expression
  • And more!

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

For students who demonstrate mastery of these skills, provide enrichment opportunities. Allow students who master the unit to create their own board game, quiz, or tutorial video about the concepts on the test.

If there are students who may need additional support, allow students to complete the assessment in a one-on-one environment or with a small group of students. Accommodations could include reading the questions aloud, calculator use, copies of notes and completed examples, chunking the assignment into smaller portions, reducing the number of answer choices or questions, modifying the numbers for complexity, providing vocabulary cards, simplifying the wording, etc.
