Count with the Alphabet for the 100th Day of School

Practice letter recognition and counting to 100 at the same time!

Through this 100th Day of School activity, students will independently identify and write upper and lowercase letters until they have filled their entire chart.

We’ve included 52 alphabet cards and a blank hundreds chart recording sheet in your download. All your students will need to get started is a pencil!

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

Challenge fast finishers who already understand the concept to count by 5’s (or 10’s) and use a single color crayon to fill in those squares on the chart.

If students need help with skip counting, use a visual reminder of the correct order of numbers, such as a hundreds chart displayed in the classroom or on their desk plate.

More Counting to 100 Activities

This resource can be used in either your math center or reading center as an independent practice activity. We also suggest using it to reinforce your small group and full-class lessons in the following ways:

🔍 Scavenger Hunt

Hide all 52 letter cards around the room when your students are not around. Then hand each student a recording sheet and set them loose. As soon as they find a card, they identify the letter and write it TWICE on their recording sheet. Then, they leave the card in the same spot they found it and then set off to find the others. (Note: You may want to make a rule of only one student/team at a time per card. If not, things could get a little crazy!)

🧠 Memory Match

Bonus points for this version of the game as it helps students with their memorization skills! As a game for two players, students will shuffle the letter cards and lay them all face down in equal rows. Each player takes their turn flipping 2 cards to find a matching upper and lowercase letter. When they find a match, they write both letters on their recording sheet. Play as many times as you can to fill your sheet to 100!

🐟 Go Fish

It’s easy to turn these cards into a game of Go Fish! Shuffle the cards and pass out 7 to each player. The remaining cards go in a pile in the center of the play area. Taking turns, players ask each other for upper and lowercase letter matches. When students get a match, they write both letters on their recording sheets and shuffle the cards randomly back into the center pile. Gameplay continues until either player has filled their entire sheet.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Print letters on cardstock for added durability and longevity. Make multiple copies of the recording sheet, and place all pieces in a folder or large envelope for an easy-to-grab-center activity.

Sustainability Tip: Print a few recording sheets on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse.
