Support Pupils’ Informative Text Writing

Help your pupils learn how to write informative texts this school year with the help of these graphic organisers created by teachers for your primary learners!

This teacher resource pack includes four different templates designed to help your pupils group facts together when they are researching a particular topic before writing an informative text. The information they’ve written in the five spaces on the template can then be used to craft sentences or paragraphs — depending on the year level you teach!

The four-pack includes three templates focused around popular informative text topics, plus a blank template! The included topics are:

  • Animals
  • Objects
  • People

Access all four templates in full colour in the printable PDF format, or download the Microsoft Word document to edit the blank template to suit your lesson planning needs.

Informative Text Writing Lesson Ideas

Are you facing that dreaded idea block that comes when you sit down to lesson plan? Here are a few ideas from our teacher team to get you going whether you’re teaching year 1 or year 6 (or anywhere in between!).

  1. Take year 1 students on a tour of the school, and challenge them to choose a place in the school where they might hide if they were a mouse. Students should use their graphic organiser to write down information such as what the mouse would see, how the mouse would access the hiding spot, and so on. Students can then return to the classroom and use their organiser to craft a text about the perfect mouse house.
  2. Why not shake things up for your year 6 students? Create a list of informative text ideas that you can assign based on the colour they are predominately wearing that day! For example, students wearing predominately red might write about the benefits of a four-day school week, while students wearing predominately white may choose an invention and write whether or not it has improved society.
