Practise segmenting one-syllable words into their phonemes with this fun game!

Printable Phoneme Segmentation Game

Phoneme segmentation is a crucial skill for young learners to develop as it lays the foundation for reading and writing. To help reinforce this skill in the classroom, a variety of gun and engaging activities are suggested. This phoneme segmentation game is perfect for adding to your range of phoneme segmentation activities for your small group rotations.

The objective of this game is for the students to identify and isolate individual sounds in words. Boxes are included on the task cards and can be used to assist students in breaking up the sounds or to extend students and have them write the graphemes that correspond to each of the phonemes.

How to play SPLAT!

  1. Print out the task cards on cardstock and cut them out on the dotted line. Store in a resealable bag to be used again and again.
  2. Shuffle the cards and place them in a pile face down in the middle of the playing area.
  3. Have one player draw a card, say the word presented in the image, and break it apart into individual sounds, e.g., sun = s-u-n.
  4. If the player correctly segments the phonemes, they get to keep the card. If they do not segment the phoneme correctly, they place the card on the bottom of the pile.
  5. If a SPLAT! card is drawn, the player must put all of their cards back in the pile.
  6. The player with the most cards at the end of the game wins!
