A set of 12 posters displaying some common spelling rules for suffixes and plurals.
Print these educational posters and display them in your classroom to remind students of some common spelling rules for adding suffixes and for changing words from singular to plural.
Rules include:
- When a word ends in ‘e’, drop the ‘e’ before adding ‘ing’.
- When adding the suffix ‘full’ to a word, drop one ‘l’.
- When a word ends in ‘ic’, add ‘al’ before adding ‘ly’.
- When a word ends in ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ before adding a suffix.
- When a single-syllable word has a single short vowel, double the final consonant before adding ‘ed’ or ‘ing’.
- When a multi-syllabic word ends in ‘l’, double the ‘l’ before adding ‘ed’ or ‘ing’.
- When a word ends in one ‘f’, change the ‘f’ to ‘v’ and add ‘es’.
- When a word ends in ‘ss’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ or ‘x’ or ‘z’, add ‘es’.
- When a word ends in ‘o’ and is preceded by a vowel, just add ‘s’.
- When a word ends in ‘o’ and is preceded by a consonant, add ‘es’.
- When a word ends in ‘y’ and is preceded by a vowel, just add ‘s’.
- When a word ends in ‘y’ and is preceded by a consonant, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘es’.
Great resource idea but the text is too small for the students to read and access independently from their desks if it is displayed on a pin-up board. Smaller picture, larger text, perhaps.

Hi, great resource but I've always thought the plural for roof is rooves not roofs? Thanks
Hi Gemma, While rooves is not technically incorrect, it is seen as an archaic way of spelling roofs. The pronunciation is still the same in different dialects but the preferred spelling in both US and UK English is roofs. Thank you for your comment. I am so glad you are enjoying our resources.
There is a mistake on one of the pages of the spelling rule posters - suffixes and plurals. It reads: SUFFIX RULE When a word ends in ‘y’, change the ‘i’ to ‘y’ before adding a suffix This should read: When a word ends in ' y', change the 'y' to 'i' before adding a suffix. Great resource though. Linda
Thank you for spotting this Linda! We have now fixed it up, so please feel free to download the updated version. Kind regards, Scott
