A Printable Recipe Book Template for Procedural Writing

When it comes to teaching procedural writing to young students, recipes are great example texts to analyse and create! They include all the key structural features of procedure texts that we want our students to become familiar with (aim, equipment, series of steps), and the experience of making a simple dish is one that is common to your students. 

This printable recipe book template has been designed by our experienced teacher team so your students can learn more about recipes as a type of procedural writing. The resource contains four A4-sized pages. Each page includes two mini-book pages (eight pages in total). This printable recipe book template includes:

• A title page
• An ingredients page
• An equipment page
• Separate pages for Steps 1-5 with space for pictures and lines for writing

This resource downloads not only as a printable PDF, but also as an editable Google Slides document. If you wish your students to complete the activity digitally, simply delete the writing lines and add a text box for your students to type in.

How to Use This Recipe Book Template When Teaching Procedural Writing

1. Introduction to Procedural Writing – Start by introducing the concept of procedural writing to your students. Explain that procedural writing is a type of writing that provides step-by-step instructions for completing a task. Use examples from everyday life, such as following a recipe or assembling a piece of furniture.
2. Exploring Recipes – Discuss the structure of a recipe with your students, including ingredients, equipment needed and the steps involved in making the dish. Show examples of different recipes and analyse the language used in each step.
3. Brainstorming Recipes – Once students have a good understanding of procedural writing, it’s time for them to decide upon a recipe! As a class, brainstorm some of the students’ favourite recipes. You might even encourage students to invent new dishes of their own imagination!
4. Writing Process – Once the students have decided upon a recipe, guide them through the writing process as they fill in their recipe books. Encourage them to use detailed instructions for each step that feature clear and concise language. Remind them to also include diagrams/illustrations for each step to make it easier for the reader to follow the process.
5. Cooking Day – Once the recipe books are complete, why not turn your classroom into a kitchen? Choose a few (simple!) recipes to make as a class and let students take turns following the instructions. This hands-on experience reinforces the importance of clear and accurate writing.

To assemble the recipe book, follow these simple steps.

1. Download the PDF version of the reader by clicking the Download button.
2. On your printer, select double-sided printing. Be sure to flip on the short edge.
3. Compile the pages, making sure the first page is at the bottom of your pile. 
4. Fold your collection of pages in half to make a Half Letter-sized book.
