What Are Personal Connections to Faraway Places?

Once your students have an understanding of the connections they have with local people and places, they are ready to explore their connections with people and places further afield!

We all have connections to people and places beyond our immediate local area. For example, someone might have a connection to a faraway place because it is an annual family holiday destination. Alternatively, the connection to a faraway place may be more strongly linked to the people who live there, e.g. an overseas relative.

Ready-Made Content About Personal Connections

At Teach Starter, we understand how busy teachers are! It’s hard to find time in your overcrowded schedules to research and create teaching resources to accompany your units of work. That’s where our team of dedicated teachers steps in!

This teaching presentation is the complete package when it comes to teaching your students the connections they have with places outside their immediate locality. Students will explore their connections to faraway people and places, and the factors that affect these connections.

The presentation is broken into two sections. The first section explores students’ personal connections to faraway places by exploring the following questions:

  • Near or far?
  • What are some faraway places?
  • What affects our connection to places?
  • How do distance and location affect our connection to places?
  • What are some types of maps?

The second section of the presentation includes a series of slides where students must answer a series of mapping questions using state, country and world maps.

A writing activity for students to complete independently is included at the end of the presentation.

Having engaged with the presentation, students should be well-equipped to answer the following inquiry questions:

  1. How am I connected to places that are far away?
  2. What are the factors that affect my connection to these places?
  3. What are some types of maps?
