A mathematics investigation about fractions, embedded in a real-world context.

This open-ended mathematics investigation has been designed to deepen students’ understanding of fractions.

In this investigation, students must use their knowledge and understanding of fractions to design a colourful floor rug for a home renovation competition. The floor rug design must adhere to a list of competition rules. Students must record and analyse their colour choices on the worksheet provided.

This teaching resource includes:

  • teacher notes, detailing a range of important information about the investigation
  • a detailed description of the investigation for students, including step-by-step instructions
  • two blank floor rug templates
  • two ‘recording and analysing’ worksheets
  • reflection questions.

    Firstly, thank you for this fantastic resource!! I would just like to suggest an improvement as I have noticed that the rug has 25 squares. As such, this makes it difficult for children to simplify their fractions as the factors of 25 are only 1, 5 & 25. Whereas, if there were 24 or 30 squares children could simplify more of their fractions due to their being more factors of 24 and 30? I hope this makes sense... Kind regards, Miss M

      Hi Monique, Thank you for the very sensible suggestion! We have taken your feedback on board and changed the rug template so that it is a 6 x 4 rectangle (24 squares). The more simplifying for the students to do, the better! Kind regards, Steph
