A mathematics investigation about measuring distance, embedded in a real-world context.

This open-ended mathematics investigation has been designed to deepen students’ understanding of length.

In this investigation, the students imagine that they are entering a paper plane competition. They have designed three different paper planes and can’t decide which one to enter in the competition.

The students must test all three of their paper plane designs to see which one flies the furthest. They must accurately measure and record the distance flown by each paper plane, then use the information to make a decision about which design to enter in the competition.

This teaching resource includes:

  • teacher notes, detailing a range of important information about the investigation
  • a detailed description of the investigation for students, including step-by-step instructions
  • planning and recording worksheets
  • reflection questions.

Is there a way I can use the video in a Slide for the students to see before they begin the task?
