What Multiplication Sentence Does the Model Represent?

Is this a question you find yourself asking the students in your classroom? As students are beginning to learn about different ways to represent multiplication, your students will learn different ways to represent the same problem. Typically, students learn about the following multiplication models:

  • Array multiplication
  • Equal groups
  • Multiplying on a number line
  • Repeated addition
  • Listing multiples

Multiplication Games For Kids!

We all know the benefit of adding some games to your classroom to help students get excited about their learning. Teach Starter has created a whole-class multiplication game to help your students understand the relationship between arrays, equal groups, repeated addition and multiplication.

When you are ready for your students to play the game, hand out one card to each student. If there are extra cards, consider giving two different cards to the same students. All cards must be used in the deck.

The student with the sentence, ‘I am the starter,’ begins the game by standing up and reading their card. The student with the matching pictorial model on their card stands up and reads their card. The game continues until the last person reads out, ‘I am the end!’

This activity works well as a maths warm-up activity or when you have a few extra minutes of class remaining. It can also be used as a maths centre activity by having a pair of students match up the ends like dominoes.
