Letter Play with CVC Words 

The ability to distinguish and manipulate the distinct sounds in words is a fundamental aspect of phonemic awareness. This engaging digital resource has been designed to help students practise spelling CVC words and manipulating their phonemes to make new words.

Each of the 20 activity slides contains three images. Students look at the first picture, then spell out the word by typing one letter in each box. (The first letter is already filled in.) Students then look at the next picture and follow the directions to change the letter. Once the third word has been completed, a word chain has been formed! 

Multiple Applications for This CVC Spelling Activity

The applications of this resource are as diverse as the learners in your class! This versatile phonics resource can be used in your classroom in a variety of ways.

Independent activity

Allow more-confident students to work through the resource independently by assigning the activity in Google classroom. Ensure that the students complete the activity in Edit mode, not in Presentation mode.

Targeted group activity

Work on the resource as a targeted support activity with a group of less-confident learners. While working on each slide, scaffold how to segment each word into its phonemes. Support students in identifying which phoneme within the word is changing.

Whole-class lesson 

Project the presentation onto your interactive whiteboard and work through the slides as a whole-class lesson or review. You might like to provide your students with mini-whiteboards so they can write down the three correct words before discussing the correct answers as a class.
