A worksheet that focuses on converting units of capacity.

How to Convert Metric Units of Capacity

Units of capacity include millilitres (mL), litres (L), kilolitres (kL) and megalitres (ML). The formulas for converting metric units of capacity are as follows:

  • 1 L = 1000 mL
  • 1 kL = 1000 L
  • 1 ML = 1000 kL

Metric units of capacity follow multiples of 1000, making it an easy way to remember the conversion process.

Working with smaller units of capacity and then moving into larger units, allows students to have a better understanding of their scale. This understanding can then be used to make connections to real-world uses of larger units of capacity to measure pools, water tanks and dams.

In this worksheet, students will convert measurements from 1 L up to 100 ML. There are multiple answers which require the use of decimal representations.

An answer sheet is included with your download to make marking fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

Task students who require an additional challenge with finding the capacity of a general object they come across in their day-to-day life, e.g. their water bottle. Have them determine the capacity in all four units featured in the worksheet. Task them with researching the capacity of the world’s largest pool and then have them determine how many times they would need to empty their water bottle into the pool to fill it up.

Students who need extra support can refer to Converting Units of Measurement Posters which has the specific calculations necessary for converting units of capacity.

In addition to individual student work time, use this worksheet as a:

  • a rotation for guided maths groups
  • lesson exit ticket
  • fast finisher activity
  • homework assignment
  • whole-class review (via smartboard).
