Identify community helpers and the tools they use in different locations around the community.

Recognising Trusted People in the Community

Learning how to keep themselves safe when out and about in the big, wide world is a highly valuable skill for children to learn. It is vital that young people know who the trusted people in their community are and what those people do to help them stay safe and healthy.

This resource engages your students in identifying and sorting community helpers and the tools they use in different locations. The locations covered in this resource are:

  • grocery store
  • school
  • bakery
  • fire station
  • post office
  • police station
  • hospital.

Further Applications of This Community Helpers Activity

This resource has been designed to assist you in implementing your civics lesson.

Why not take the resource further by using it as a stimulus to discuss safe places at home, at school, while playing or while shopping? Encourage students to provide reasons as to what makes those places safe.
