What Is a Repeated Addition Sentence?

As students begin to strengthen their understanding of addition, they learn to quickly add together double facts and then multiple addends that are the same. When they enter year 2, they will commonly work on repeated addition sentences, a precursor to understanding multiplication concepts. So, how can you explain a repeated addition sentence to your students? Let’s take a quick look at what this means and how you can explain it to your students!

A repeated addition sentence is a way to express multiplication by adding the same number multiple times. When explaining this to your students, you may say something such as, ‘I’m going to add this number over and over again to find the answer.’

For example, if you want to multiply 3 by 4, you can create a repeated addition sentence like this:

4 + 4 + 4

In this sentence, you’re adding three groups of 4, or the number 4 three times, which is the same as multiplying 3 by 4.
