Engage young learners in developing their map skills with a design-your-own map project.

Create a Neighborhood Map!

Turn your class into junior cartographers with this always-popular map skills activity! This activity allows your students to plan and design a community map of their very own.

With this project, students will design and create a city map by using different map parts, cutouts and map symbols. Young learners can develop their mapping skills by placing buildings, landmarks and symbols on our community map design templates.

This student-led maths project is a fun way to teach your students about cardinal directions, map symbols, map keys and more!

The resource download includes:

  • a planning sheet for initial sketches/designs
  • a map design brainstorm templates
  • map symbol cutouts
  • two blank city templates.

✂️ Give Them the (Safety) Scissors

This project makes for a bonus cutting skills activity! Cutting requires students to work multiple muscle groups. It also:

  • strengthens finger and hand muscles
  • builds dexterity and fine motor skills
  • improves hand-eye coordination
  • develops focus and attention.

Select From Multiple File Formats

This project is available in multiple formats for you to choose from. Use the dropdown arrow to select the colour or blackline version of your choice (PDF or Google Slides).

Choose a file, print it out, and you’re off and running!

It is recommended that you print the map cut-outs on thick card or heavier paper for durability.
